HUGS: Children’s Mental Health Program

NAMI Collier’s Children’s Mental Health Program, named HUGS, provides a long-term, clinical continuum of care to children and teens living with mental illness, developmental delays, and social-emotional difficulties at no cost to the families.

Families work one-on-one with a NAMI Collier Care Coordinator to help identify and meet attainable goals for their child. Some common goals include:

  • Setting up a medical home, in which caregivers have all of the child’s medical and insurance information organized for easy access.
  • Working with the family to request an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) if the child does not already have one.
  • Finding adequate health insurance.
  • Identifying and starting long-term outpatient mental healthcare, such as with a psychologist or psychiatrist.
  • Getting a formal diagnosis.
  • Providing direct interventions carried out by clinical staff.

Clinical staff oversee the program and advise Care Coordinators so that all interventions follow best clinical practices.

The HUGS program is open to anyone who needs support navigating the mental healthcare system and the resources available for children and teens in Collier County. Care Coordinators who are fluent in Spanish and Creole are also available to support families who are not comfortable with English.
